‘Hero surfer’ Roger Casugay named as SEA Games flag bearer in closing ceremonies

The hero surfer from La Union, Roger Casugay was chosen to be the country’s flag beater in the closing ceremonies of the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

“These Games are not only about medals. It is about character, resilience, love for one another and shoring up the faith of the person next to you, something that Casugay has exemplified,” Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez said in a statement.

Casugay became viral after he gave up his gold medal match in the longboard competition to save his Indonesian opponent Arip Nurhidayat.

The two had a rematch last weekend and Casugay managed to bag the gold medal for the long boarding event.

Casugay will also receive a special plaque of recognition and a cash incentive for his heroic act on Friday according to the PSC.

“I will include Roger in our awarding in Malacañang to meet the President,” Ramirez said.

The closing ceremonies for the biennial SEA Games will be held on December 11. Vietnam is set to be the next host the SEA Games in 2021.
