Indonesian President Joko Widodo has commended the Filipino surfer who rescued his Indonesian opponent during their gold medal match in the Southeast Asian Games.

On Friday, Roger Casugay went viral after he gave up his shot for a gold medal in the longboard event to save his opponent Indonesian Arip Nurhidiyat in La Union.

“To win a competition and uphold sportsmanship are important, but humanity is above all,” Jokowi tweeted in Indonesian.

“My appreciation for Roger Casugay, a Filipino surfer who lost the chance to gain gold to save an Indonesian athlete from falling during the competition,” the President added.

Casugay and Nurhidiyat had a rematch over the weekend. The former finally had his shot to win the gold medal after defeating another Filipino surfer Rogelion Esquivel.

“No, I’m not a hero. I didn’t really save him from drowning. He is a good swimmer. I just calmed him down,” Casugay told the media after his victory in the longboard competition.
