LeBron blames Rockets GM’s ‘misinformed’ tweet for China mess

LOS ANGELES, USA – Basketball superstar LeBron James said Rockets general manager Daryl Morey’s tweet supporting protesters in Hong Kong was “misinformed,” adding that the executive should have just shut his mouth.

The remarks by the Lakers forward are the most direct so far by a high-profile NBA figure in a controversy that has raised questions about the league’s future in China, said a Rappler report, citing Agence France Presse (AFP).

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and several American politicians have defended Morey, citing his freedom of speech, but James said the careless exercise of free speech can bring harm.

“I believe he (Morey) wasn’t educated on the situation at hand, and he spoke,” AFP quoted James as saying before a pre-season game between the Lakers and Golden State Warriors.

“So many people could have been harmed not only financially but physically, emotionally and spiritually. So just be careful with what we tweet, and we say, and we do,” added James, who is known for speaking out on hot-button issues.

“Yes, we do have freedom of speech, but there can be a lot of negative that comes with that too.”

The Lakers and Nets were thrown into the whirlwind when they arrived in China last week for a pair of exhibition games after Morey tweeted: “Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.”
