Guiao resigns as Gilas coach

Following their forgettable campaign in the 2019 FIBA World Cup, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Yeng Guiao has decided to relinquish his post.

Guiao tendered his resignation to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) two days after the national team arrived from China.

Spin.ph, which obtained a copy of the Guiao’s statement submitted to SBP, reported that the 60-year-old Guiao apologized for the team’s 32nd-place finish in the World Cup.

“I knew what conditions existed, what the limitations were, and still, I accepted the challenge. I hold myself responsible for the consequences,” he said the statement per.

Gilas finished dead-last in the 32-team field after losing all of its five games.

Guiao said the team fell short but they “gave their best against talented, bigger, stronger, and better-prepared athletes from the best teams in the world.”

Guiao said he is stepping down so the SBP can have “a free hand in building and developing a program towards achieving our objective of competing with the best of the best.”
