New champions will be crowned in the US Open.
This after Naomi Osaka, the defending women’s champion, lost to Belinda Bencic, 7-5, 6-4..
Osaka’s exit came after men’s defending champion Novak Djokovic retired due to shoulder injury in his first round match against Stan Wawrinka.
In an espn.com report, Osaka was bothered by an achy left knee and didn’t practice that key part of her game leading into the US Open.
“I honestly didn’t move well today. You know what I mean? I felt like I was always flat-footed. … The knee was a little bit annoying in the movement aspect,” said Osaka, who is the number one seed.
“But I think that that’s something I should have overcome,” she added.
Bencic has been dominating Osaka as she is now 3-0 in their head-to-head match in 2019.
“I don’t have the biggest power. Don’t have the most winners or most aces. But I think I can really read the opponent’s game well,” said Bencic.
