‘I was willing to give the Koreans a good run for their game’ – Congen Paul

DUBAI: Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes, who watched the Azkals-South Korea match at the Al Maktoum Stadium, Monday, Jan. 7 with spouse, Dr. Yasmin Balajadia Cortes said the game showed the Philippine national team’s “resolve not to be taken lightly.”

“The mere fact that the goal of Korea did not come until the 67th minute showed how well prepared our defense was. Korea is a football powerhouse in Asia and have long been one of the favorites to win the championships, and for us to keep ourselves at 1-0 with Korea is a manifestation of our spirit and I was willing to give the Koreans a good run for their game,” Cortes told The Filipino Times.

“Many sports analysts have dismissed the Philippines – Korea match as a lopsided victory for Korea. But the way we defended our fort showed our resolve not to be taken lightly nor even looked at by more powerful and formidable team as we are worthy of a good fight,” he added.

Cortes congratulated the national team for making sure that the Filipinos have something to cheer for as far as football and the Philippines’ participation in the Asian football championships is concerned.

“There are two more matches that the Philippines is looking forward to, that with China and Kyrgyzstan. Hopefully as well we get to be chosen to go to the next round knowing that the top two of each bracket and the four best third place will advance to the next round,” he said.
