Daughter of OFW in UAE breaks own record, bags gold medal in Palarong Pambansa

The daughter of an overseas Filipina worker (OFW) in UAE won first place in the secondary girls 100-meter hurdles finals during the Palarong Bansa athletics meet at the Quirino Stadium oval.

Eliza Cuyom not only won a gold medal during the event. She also broke the current record by finishing at 14.5 seconds, reported Manila Standard.

The young athlete was able to break her own record of 14.73 seconds. Prior to this, previous record was at 14.9, set by Michelle Pastasaja of Western Mindanao in 1996.

“Masaya po. Nakakatuwa. Iyung ginawa ko sa trials, inimprove ko pa sa finals,” said the 17-year-old athlete.

Cuyom, who hails from Dasmarinas, Cavite, beat National Capital Region’s Ella Sirilan (15.18 seconds) and third placer Evangeline Caminong (15.44 seconds).

Cuyom’s mother works as a domestic helper in the UAE.
