Who is Lucas Matthysse, Pacquiao’s next opponent?

Filipino boxer and senator Manny Pacquiao started his training on Monday morning for his bout with Lucas Matthysse which is for June 24 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

“I started early because my last fight was in July last year. My opponent is a reigning WBA champion so I must be in tip-top shape when I climb up the ring,” Pacquiao said.

As what Pacquiao mentioned, Matthysse, also called as “La Máquina”, held the welterweight title of the World Boxing Association (WBA) since January 2018. He also previously held the WBC interim super lightweight title from 2012 to 2013.

Matthysse, an Argentine professional boxer and younger brother of Walter Matthysse, is known for his aggressive pressure fighting style and punching power.

Ed Tolentino, a veteran fight analyst also said that Matthysse is an aggressive fighter.

“Matthysse is an aggressive puncher who packs a wallop in his right hand. Matthysse-Pacquiao is like two wrecking balls on a head-on collision. It is going to be a demolition derby, especially if Matthysse shows up in shape,” Tolentino said.

The 35-year-old boxer who stands at 169cm has joined a total of 44 fights and holds a professional boxing record of 39 wins and 4 losses. Out of his 39 wins, 36 are by knockout, 2 are by decision, and one by disqualification.
