‘Chess is close to the heart of Filipinos’ — Torre

DUBAI: Chess has a bright future in the Philippines because it is “close to the heart of Filipinos” and has the support of government officials, this according to renowned chess grand master Eugene Torre.

“Chess is close to the heart of Filipinos. The Philippine Sport Commission helps chess to grow by giving more support, Torre told The Filipino Times in an interview..

Torre also commended Mayor Elpidio “Pidi” F. Barzaga Jr of Dasmarinas, Cavite, who, he said, “provides great support in chess by offering various facilities like library, chess sets, incentives and scholarships.”

“If only his chess initiatives will be replicated in various cities and provinces it would really promote chess,” Torre said.

To Filipino chess enthusiasts, here’s Torre’s advice: “Becoming a grandmaster is a great honor. Winning every single game is very important but learning to apply the golden principle of chess in life is a greater achievement. It helps you become a better person.”

Torres has disclosed plans to open a school for chess to keep kids of drugs.

“It has always been at the back of my head to establish a school of chess. I would like to share my knowledge and experience to all wood pushers and enthusiasts,” said the chess grandmaster, who became a household name after beating then-reigning World Champion Anatoly Karpov in Manila back in 1976.
