Australian paper pokes fun at Pacquiao for withdrawing from Horne rematch

An Australian newspaper poked fun at People’s Champ Sen. Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao after withdrawing from his supposed a rematch fight against Australian boxer Jeff Horn.

Courier Mail, a daily tabloid newspaper in Brisbane, Australia, edited a photo of Horn punching Pacquiao’s head on a body of a chicken.

Pacquiao was expected to set a rematch with Horn later this year after the latter pulled an upset win against the former in Australia earlier this year.

Pacquiao said he is busy with his senatorial duties.

Pacquiao on Horn rematch: ‘Im busy with government duties’

The supposed Pacquiao-Horn rematch on November 12 which will be held in Philippine Arena, was cancelled, Australian promoters of the fight announced Friday.

Manny Pacquiao, the “Pambansang Kamao” and a senator, will be prioritizing his government duties over his rematch with Jeff Horn for the WBO world welterweight title fight.

“On behalf of the Philippines government, he (Pacquiao) will be part of a delegation that will visit China in the middle of his proposed preparation period for the fight,” Inquirer quoted local promoter Dean Lonergan saying.

After Pacquiao lost against Horn last July via unanimous decision in Brisbane, he requested for a rematch but work as a senator got in the way.

Lonergan assured everyone that Pacquiao will push through with the rematch in 2018.

Meanwhile another contender wants to take Pacquiao’s place in fighting Horn later this year.

Jesse Vargas, who lost to Pacquiao via unanimous decision in Vegas last November showed interest in fighting Horn said promoters.

Pacquiao-Horn rematch to be held in PH arena—DOT

Filipino boxer-turned-senator Manny Pacquaio and former Australian school teacher Jeff Horn are set to battle it out once again in the ring. But the question remains, when and where?

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk announced on Monday, August 21, the Manny Pacquiao-Jeff Horn will be held in Brisbane, Australia.

“This (rematch) is now confirmed it will happen. I have had a meeting earlier today which has confirmed that Manny Pacquiao will definitely be in Brisbane this year for a rematch with Jeff Horn,” Sydney Morning Herald quoted Quirk as saying.

Top Rank Inc. chief Bob Arum echoed the mayor’s announcement, eyeing November 12 as the tentative date for the rematch to be held at the 50,000-seater Suncorp Stadium.

A day later, Department of Tourism (DOT) secretary Wanda Teo issued a contrasting statement, saying the anticipated rematch will be held in the Philippine Arena this December.

“Just this morning we have talked to [1-PACMAN Partylist] Rep. Eric Pineda. He was asking us if we could sponsor the Pacquiao fight this coming December. So we’re working on that,” The Philippine Star quoted the tourism secretary as saying.

A rematch clause was included in the contract signed by the two boxers, allowing Pacquiao to challenge again in the event that he loses the title to Horn.

The eight-division world champion lost to the Australian contender via unanimous decision last month, handing Horn the WBO welterweight champion title.

In what could be considered as the greatest upsets in sports this year, the newcomer Horn beat the seasoned veteran Pacquiao in the judges’ scorecards 117-111, 115-113, 115-113.
