Filipina athlete wins two gold in US taekwondo tilt

Florida: Asian Games bronze medalist Veronica Inocencio Domingo brought laurels to the Philippines by winning two golds and one silver over the weekend in the 2016 Sunshine State Games taekwondo competition at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach Florida, US.

Domingo, a two-time Southeast Asian Games champion, remained a force to reckon with in sparring as she dominated the women’s ultra heavyweight over 67-kilogram division in the two-day tournament, Manila Times reported.

She also delivered gold medal in the women’s Senior 2 individual poomsae [form] and won one silver in the Senior 2 pair poomsae.

“I am still holding on my dream to clinch the first gold in the Olympics for the Philippines. I’ll continue joining tournaments here in the US to stay fit and learn new techniques,” Domingo, the former head coach of the Far Eastern University taekwondo team in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, reportedly said.

Sharing the spotlight was Angelito Ong, who copped two gold medals in First Master men’s pair poomsae and team poomsae and a silver in individual poomsae so as Jan Mickael, who won two golds in the men’s juniors under 59-kg. sparring and individual poomsae, said the news portal.

The other medalists were Ryu Choung Hwan with one gold in men’s Second Senior team poomsae and silver in individual poomsae; Rebecca Ong with one gold in women’s Second Senior pair poomsae and silver in individual poomsae; Michael Bugarin with one gold in men’s Second Senior individual poomsae, silver in pair poomsae and bronze in under 68-kg. sparring; and Andrew Hutchinson with silver in men’s cadet over 65-kg. sparring and one bronze in individual poomsae, Manila Times reported.
