Filipina cancer survivor learns to value regular checkup

by

A Filipina ovarian cancer survivor learned the hard way the value of having a regular medical checkup and is advising others to do so even if they are healthy.

“To all the girls out there (pati na din boys) please please please.. it is very important to have your general checkup at least every 6 months. Even if you feel that you’re healthy and strong.. Health is Wealth guys. Wag nyo ako gayahin.. i knew na may mali sa body ko pero i kept thinking na im ok and i’m healthy kaya hindi agad ako nagpacheck up. Ladies listen to your body. See your doctor!” read the Facebook post from Christine Ching.

(“To all the girls out there, as well as the boys, it is very important to have your general checkup at least every 6 months. Even if you feel that you’re healthy and strong. Health is wealth, guys. Take it from me. I knew that there’s something wrong with my body but I kept thinking that Im okay and I’m healthy so wasn’t able to immediately have a checkup. Ladies listen to your body. See your doctor!”)

Ching posted the advice after ovarian cancer nearly took her life two years ago. She felt sharing the lesson she learned so others won’t suffer the same ordeal she went through.

Ching related in her post that in April 2015 she started having constipation, stomach pain and lower back pain. She ignored them and later her lower abdomen enlarged. When the pains became unbearable, she finally saw an internal medicine doctor, who referred her to an ob-gyn because of her condition. After a series of lab tests, a 19 cm tumor was detected inside her.

Still in denial stage, Ching went to other doctors for a second opinion but the diagnoses were all the same. By May, she resigned from her job to undergo the needed operation.

The tumor was surgically removed along with her left ovary, fallopian tube, some lymph nodes, and her omentum. Her medical problem did not end there. The tumor was found malignant and she was also diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 22.

Ching underwent four cycles of chemotherapy lasting from July to November 2015. Fortunately, she overcame the cancer and survived to tell her ordeal.
