Make a difference to children without mothers, this Mother’s day

“All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother,” a quote by US President Abraham Lincoln that best describes the relationship of Filipinos with their mothers. To a Filipino, a mother is the one who instills a sense of belonging and ownership that characterizes the Filipino relationships. A study states that children in the Filipino community grow up with a sense of belonging, more toward their mothers; for them, their mothers are a very important part of their identity.

So what happens to those children who don’t have their mothers or families to support them during their formative years? According to published reports, there are over 1.8 million children abandoned on the streets of the Philippines. This is nearly 1% of the country’s entire population. As a result of poverty or natural disasters, many of these children experience starvation or disease, suffer abuse or exploitation, or fall victim to drugs or crime.

So this year, Xpress Money, as part of its CSR platform, H.O.P.E, is reaching out to the community to help tackle this issue. In association with the Virlanie Foundation, a charity based in Manila, which runs various programs to meet the needs of street children, the company has launched the “Mother’s Day for Kids without Mothers” campaign, to reach out to and urge OFW’s to make a difference to the lives of these children.

Here’s how it works. From April 21,2017 to May 14, 2017, every time an OFW sends money to the Philippines, Xpress Money will contribute a part of the transfer fees to provide quality education, housing, food, school supplies and other benefits such as hobby classes for a few Filipino street kids.

Talking about this initiative, Ashwin Gedam, Vice President – Global Marketing, Xpress Money said, “Community outreach is very important to Xpress Money’s core values and culture. We have always tried to uplift communities and highlight issues that concern the society. This campaign for Mother’s day aims to bring light to the lives of abandoned children in the Philippines and urges the OFW community to support the cause. As one of the leading money transfer organizations, we believe in empowering and developing the underprivileged in the communities and corridors we operate in. We are sure that OFWs will be inspired to support this cause.”

Xpress Money is also inviting women who are currently in Manila to spend a day with these children at the Virlanie Foundation in Manila for the Mother’s Day Feast, which will be held on 9th May 2017. OFWs can nominate any woman they know, who would want to be part of this noble event by visiting www.xpressmoney.com/hope.PR Advtrl 16x14cm 13

This year, OFWs have an opportunity to not just celebrate Mother’s Day with their mums, but also make it truly special by giving it a new meaning to life for a few children without mothers.
