Justice Secretary Boying Remulla announced that the deadline for sim registration has been extended for 90 days.
“There’s a 90-day extension. But most of the services that come with the cellphones that are not registered will be cut off with the telcos,” Remulla said before the inter-agency meeting on oil spill.
“So there will be a social media unavailability for those who do not register in the next 90 days,” he added.
The deadline for the sim registration is on April 26, Wednesday.
“Most of the services that come with the cellphones that are not registered will be cut off with the telcos,” Remulla added on Tuesday.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology or DICT previously oppose the extension.
“We encourage everyone to register to promote the responsible use of SIMs and provide law enforcement agencies the necessary tools to crack down on perpetrators who use SIMs for their crimes, consistent with the declared policy of the law,” the DICT said.
This means that sim cards that are not yet registered will face deactivation in accordance with Republic Act No. 11934, otherwise known as the SIM Registration Act.
The measure, which was signed on October 10, 2022 and implemented on Dec. 27, 2022, in order to prevent crimes, text scams and mobile phishing.
