The Department of Foreign Affairs said that at least 69 Filipinos have been evacuated from Sudan as clashes intensify in the country.
DFA Undersecretary Eduardo De Vega said that the first batch of repatriates already boarded the bus and traveled by land on their way to Egypt.
“The first batch of 50 is actually on the road as we speak,” De Vega told the Inquirer.
The DFA official added that three Filipinos were repatriated few days ago.
“Aside from the 50 Filipinos yesterday and the three Filipinas who were brought to Saudi Arabia, we know of at least 16 other Filipinos who left on their own the other day with their employers providing transport,” De Vega added.
The DFA said that around 725 Filipinos have registered to be in Sudan, an increase from the official data of 200.
At least 327 of them have sought assistance for repatriation.
The Philippine Embassy in Cairo reminds Filipinos to wait for the embassy to be contacted by staff before proceeding to their designated bus stops.
“Find out whether the final destination of your bus is Wadi Halfa or Aswan. It is always better if your transportation will take you all the way to Aswan,” the embassy said.
No Filipino casualties or injured so far in the conflict hit in Sudan.
