The UAE has converted Dubai World Trade Center into a field hospital that can accommodate 3,000 patients, including 800 ones in the intensive care.
The new field hospital—the largest in the Middle East to date—is part of the government’s effort to handle the increasing number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients. It is also one of the two field hospitals to be launched in order to boost the emirate’s COVID-19 capacity from the current 5,000 beds.
The move is similar with the initiative of London to transform its ExCel Centre—the city’s largest exhibition center owned by Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company—into a 4,000-bed hospital.
According to Humaid Al Qatami, director general of Dubai Health Authority, Dubai has already prepared for “all scenarios” to fight COVID-19, and that the government is ready to help thousands of people infected or affected by the pandemic.
As of today, the staff are finalizing the field hospital. Once opened, it will be filled with hundreds of hundreds of doctors and nurses trained to treat the COVID-19 patients.
