Despite the doubts over the quality of medical supplies it produces, China said it has exported nearly 4 billion masks to other countries since March.

Officials said Sunday that the Chinese government has encouraged factories to boost their production of medical supplies amid the rising number of confirmed cases around the world, Agence France Presse reported.

China exported 3.86 billion masks, 37.5 million pieces of protective clothing, 16,000 ventilators and 2.84 million COVID-19 testing kits, according to Jin Hai, deputy director for general affairs at the General Administration of Customs.

Jin added that the medical supplies exports worth 10.2 billion yuan (US$1.4 billion) also includes 8.4 million pairs of goggles and 2.4 million infrared thermometers.
Earlier, several countries raised their issues regarding the medical supplies from China, complaining that the products shipped to them were either substandard or faulty.

Spain withdrew the order of 58,000 testing kits from a Chinese company after discovering that only have an accuracy rate of 30 percent.

The Netherlands last week also recalled 600,000 substandard masks from a shipment of 1.3 million.

Chinese officials were quick to defend at these reports and said the manufacturer “stated clearly that (the masks) are non-surgical.”

“Some media completely blamed China’s product quality, but it was due to many reasons. For example, the standards of Chinese and foreign products are different, there are differences in how they are typically used, and improper use can also raise doubts about the quality,” Jiang Fan, official from the Ministry of Commerce said.

The pronouncement backs the remarks by Hua Chunying, spokeswoman from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, who said that the Western media sensationalized and hyped up the issue.

China has insisted that it will not restrict exports of medical supplies and increased the production of COVID-19 testing kits to over 4 million a day.

Meanwhile the Chinese government vowed to tightened regulations for medical supplies, requiring them to be at par with the standards for both the domestic and their destinations.
