Spain death toll surges to 9,053 as COVID-19 cases surpass 100,000

Spain announced on April 1 864 deaths due to COVID-19, its highest single-day death toll.
The latest tally has brought the country’s fatality to 9,053; the second highest death toll next to Italy.
Spain has overtaken China with confirmed cases soared to 102,136 from 94,417, according to Spain’s Ministry of Health and Science.
Madrid, the epicenter of the outbreak in the Iberian country, accounts for 29,840 cases with 3,865 deaths.
Despite the rising cases, infection rate maintained its downward trend with over 8 percent increase on Wednesday compared from 11 percent increase on Tuesday, Reuters reported.
The number of recoveries also increased with 22,647 patients discharged or recovered.
Meanwhile, health officials said that the situation on hospitals remain critical despite the peaking of the pandemic.
They added that the intensive care system would remain overstretched at least a week or longer as many health workers are contracting the virus.
More than 9,400 health workers were diagnosed with the virus as of Friday, according to website ElMedicoInteractivo.
