More male patients in their 20s contract COVID-19 in UAE—report

The tests for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are done in all age groups, but a senior pathologist in charge of a private COVID-19 testing lab in the Capital noted a high percentage are men in their 20s in the UAE, Khaleej Times reported.
Dr Martine Claire McManus, group head of Pathology and Laboratory Services at VPS Healthcare, said studies done in China and South Korea showed that there are more COVID-19 positive cases in the older age group.
So, she said, the results of the study done in the UAE is surprising.
McManus said these young men do not get sick because they do not have an underlying illness and are expected to recover because of their strong immune system.
The same observation was made earlier by the director of communicable diseases at the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi and UAE health sector official spokesperson, Dr Farida Al Hosani.
Dr. Hosani said most of those infected in the UAE belong to the 22-44 age group, which is “similar to other countries”.
“There is a small rate of infection among the elderly, but the impact on them and those underlying medical issues is quite strong,” she said.
