The usage of messaging app WhatsApp has spiked by around 40% since the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, a study showed.

In the data released by consulting company Kantar, WhatsApp is currently the most used social media app as people get more keen to stay connected.

The data and consulting company, Khaleej Times reported, has conducted the study based on consumer attitude, media habits, and expectations during the pandemic. The research showed that there was a 27% increase in WhatsApp usage during the early phase of the outbreak, increasing to 40% in the mid-phase.

Other countries, meanwhile, experienced an increase of 51% in the usage of the app. Spain showed a 76% increase in time spent on WhatsApp as the number of cases started to spike in the country.

Kanta, in its study, also revealed that traditional news channels like broadcast and newspapers are still the most trusted sources of information—with around 52% recognizing them as credible sources, as per Khaleej Times report.

Meanwhile, around 48% of people in the world regard government agency websites as trustworthy, while only 11% trust social media with information about the pandemic.
