Italy COVID-19 cases now stand at 53,000

Italy on Saturday diagnosed 6557 new cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) lifting the total number to 53,578.
Around 793 fatalities were recorded raising the death toll to 4,825.

Italy’s Civil Protection Agency said the number patients in intensive care increased to 2,857 from 2,655.
The EU commission on Friday moved to strike a deal raised by EU finance ministers on March 5 to suspend EU budget rules that limit borrowing, providing Italy and other governments a free hand to fight the disease.

“The Italian government will be able to put as much money into the economy as needed. Normal budget rules, debt rules for example, will not be applied at this stage,” EU Commission head Ursula von der Leyen told Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper.
Italy, the most affected country in the world next to China, is struggling to cope with the surge of new cases and fatalities brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
