Three days before the 14-day quarantine for passengers and crew of cruise ship Diamond Princess, the US Embassy in Japan will evacuate the Americans on board.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the US Embassy emailed 428 Americans on board detailing plans for a voluntary evacuation for US citizens and their immediate family tonight Japan time.

The US government “recommends, out of an abundance of caution, that US citizens disembark and return to the United States for further monitoring,” CNN quoted the letter as saying.

There are 3,600 people on board the cruise ship docked in Yokohama since February 4. At least 24 Americans are among the 219 people confirmed to have been infected by a Chinese passenger who was first diagnosed with the novel coronavirus.

American passengers who chose to be evacuated by the US Embassy will be flown via a chartered plane from an unspecified airport in Japan then straight to Travis Air Force Base in California. Others will be flown onward to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.
