Sultan Haitham bin Tari succeeds Sultan Qaboos as new ruler of Oman

Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said was announced as the new Sultan of Oman after Sultan Qaboos of Oman passed away. 
 
According to a local newspaper in Oman, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said took the legal oath before the Council of Oman on January 11, 2020, as the new ruler of the country.
 
The Omani Council just held an emergency session at its headquarters in Al-Bustan, where the oath was conducted.
 


Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, in his first speech as the new Omani ruler aims to continue the progress led on by their late ruler as the country moves “forward on the noble approach of Sultan Qaboos in the development and progress of the Sultanate.”
 
Prior to taking oath as the country’s ruler, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said served as the Minister of Heritage and National Culture, and was one of the late Sultan Qaboos’ cousins.
Under the Basic Law of the State of Oman, a successor must declare by the royal family in three days of the throne falling vacant.
 
The country has declared three days of mourning.
