Sharjah has announced that it will be rolling out electronic tagging systems for low risk prisoners according to Sharjah police.
Sharjah is now the third emirate after Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah to use the electronic tagging scheme.
The system is expected to be adopted by other emirates in the future.
The amended Law of Criminal Procedures states that prisoners convicted of crimes with sentences of less than two years that do not include deportation are eligible for the tag.
Furthermore, the monitoring device would then allow prisoners on parole to continue with their lives and seek employment.
This would also decongest prisoners in the UAE once the system has been in place.
The electronic tagging system was first introduced in 2018 for 130 inmates according to a report on The National.
More than 300 convicts then availed the electronic tags.
