It was supposed to be a Christmas promo to entice more holiday shoppers — a giant balloon would drop with thousands of gift cards and other prizes.
But the supposed fun “ultimate mega balloon drop” turned into a nightmare Monday midnight.
As the balloons start to drop, a stampede ensued, knocking off the feet of several people among hundreds of customers racing to get their share of prizes at the ground of the Westfield Parramatta mall in Sydney.
Five people were reportedly taken to the hospital, the Australian Broadcast Network reported.
Injuries sustained included traumatic chest injuries and neck, leg and back pain.
The promotion was part of the 36-hour trading marathon ahead of Christmas.
The owner of the mall said it is investigation the incident.
