Church opens door to the homeless for sleep

In the hustle and bustle of city life, enjoying a deep slumber is a must to regain energy for the next day.

And having a decent amount of sleep has been a challenge for homeless people in San Fransisco, California

According to Evolve, authorities in San Francisco has launched an effort to remove encampments of homeless people in the city.

In the midst of the crackdown, the homeless who are desperate for sleep, found a sanctuary at the St. Boniface Church.

For 15 years, St. Boniface Church has provided a sacred space and sanctuary for the homeless in need of safe, compassionate respite during the day.

The mission, dubbed as “The Gubbio Project,”which was started by Father Louis Vitale and community activist Shelly Roder, aims to inspire dialogue and foster understanding between housed members of the community and homeless ones.

Th organization is guided by the principle that all people are worthy of dignity, respect and loving kindness.

The Gubbio Project provides its homeless guests with daily provisions, supplies, and chaplaincy necessary for those living on the streets.

Blankets and socks are also given to vagrants.

Hygiene kits, which include soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion were also distributed to the visitors.

An average of 225 people seek shelter in the church during weekdays.

No sign-in sheets or intake forms are needed.

“No questions are asked when our guests walk into the churches,” The Gubbio Project noted in their website.

“No one is ever turned away; all are welcomed, respected and treated with dignity.” (Rodney Artida)
