New Zealand island shows ‘no signs of life’ after eruption, says police

There were no signs of life when reconnaissance flights were done over New Zealand’s White Island volcano after it erupted on Monday.

In a report by BBC quoting the police, those who have been found may have been already rescued.

Authorities believed that there were about 50 people in the island that time.

Five were earlier reported dead while a total of 23 people were rescued with some suffering critical burns on their bodies.

In its latest bulletin, the police says there are no survivors on the island.

The reconnaissance flights were done after a footage from the island showed there were still tourists walking inside the crater of White Island volcano moments before its eruption.

According to Deputy Police Commissioner John Tims, the nationalities of those who were in the island were said to be “both New Zealand and overseas tourists”.

Some of those passengers were from Ovation of the Seas, a cruise ship owned by Royal Caribbean.

The island also known as Whakaari is the country’s most active volcano.

Although there were already warnings that the volcano has been in unrest for quite sometime, experts say they could not have predicted when the eruption would’ve happened.
