Frenchman tries to kill self over rape verdict

A Frenchman on trial for abduction and rape has tried to commit suicide after hearing the verdict handed down on him.

Willy Bardon, 45 years old, was sentenced to 30 years for rape and abduction resulting in the death of Elodie Kulik in 2002.

Kulik, a bank manager, was abducted, raped, strangled; her corpse was burned in January 2002 in Tertry.

French reporters who were covering the high-profile trial, saw Brandon pull out something from his right pocket after hearing the verdict.

He then drank from a large bottle of water before swallowing a pill of pesticide.

He was rushed from Court of Assizes of the Somme to the hospital.

Bardon has revived from coma the next day.

He reportedly told his family that he intends to end his life, if found guilty by the court.

He was found guilty of rape and abduction and was acquitted of murder.

Authorities has begun investigating on how he got the pill.
