Dubai airports to ban single-use plastic by 2020

Dubai airports will be rid of any single-use plastics soon.

Items such as plastic cutlery, drinking straws, take-away food packaging and polythene bags will be removed from cafes, restaurants and shops inside the airports, starting January 1, 2020.

Earlier this year, Dubai airports launched the plastic-free initiative to reduce environmental impact of Dubai’s two airports – Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport (DXB and DWC).

Eugene Barry, EVP Commercial at Dubai Airports said that they have been working closely with 250,000 concessionaires to implement the ban.

“This pledge is another step on a long journey to becoming a more environmentally responsible airport. Along with our partners, including global brands such as McDonald’s, Costa Coffee and Starbucks, we are committed to not only removing single-use plastics but in their place providing appropriate and importantly sustainable alternatives.” Barry said.

Additional products will be phased out from the airports in the next twelve months.

More recycling points will be added to support waste management in the airports.
