UAE allows domestic workers above 60 years to continue working

The UAE has decided to allow expatriate domestic workers to stay in their job and have their contract renewed even if they exceed 60 years of age.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE) will permit those workers to keep their job provided there are medically fit, their employers agree to provide health insurance to them, and the concerned authorities allow them to stay in the UAE.

“The decision regarding the helper work groups is intended to ensure the needs of employers and families in the UAE are met and to allow them to keep their workers if they deem they are still fit and able to do their job,” the Ministry’s assistant undersecretary Khalil Khouri said, quoted by the Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm.

He said work groups that will benefit from the decision include guards, shepherds, sailors, domestic workers, babysitters, private drivers, gardeners, farmers, private nurses, private instructors and teachers, private farming engineer, horse attendants, cooks and falcon attendants.

Khouri said work permits for those workers who exceed 60 years would be issued only for those who already work in the UAE and not those outside the UAE.

“Such permits will be issued for workers whose permits have expired provided the expiry period does not exceed 3 months,” he added.
