President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the suspension of the importation of rice in the country.
He gave the order to the Department of Agriculture (DA) Sec. William Dar during a press conference late Tuesday evening saying that the suspension would help local farmers who suffered from the rice tariffication law.
It was also a needed move in order to avoid the “riots” brought about by hunger and a lack of food.
As to how long this would be in effect, Duterte did not mention this, but it was needed to ensure that local farmers earned from their efforts.
Duterte also ordered Congress to appropriate funds so the government could buy “all the rice” from local farmers.
