DFA chief says OFWs in HK safe

Amid violent protests in Hong Kong that has been raging on for months, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teddy Locsin, Jr. said Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) there are safe.

“When interviewed by media, our OFWs say they are safe and have good things to say about the HK government. This is true; our consulate attests to it,” Locsin said in a tweet.

Locsin said Filipinos in Hong Kong are “grateful for their jobs” in the country which they could not afford to have in the Philippines.

“Our people are grateful for jobs in HK they won’t have in PH. If anyone endangers those jobs by reckless remarks I will kill them,” he said.

The Philippine Consul General in Hong Kong sees no reason to order deployment ban in Hong Kong amid raging protests for more than five months now.

Consul General Rally Tejada said Filipinos in Hong Kong stay safe and there is no need to terminate their deployments in the country amid the continuing unrest.

In recent days, there have battles with bricks being thrown in the streets of the Central business district. Fires and tear gas were also used against the protesters.

“Ang mga Pilipino rito ay nasa ligtas na kalagayan po. Nasa bahay lamang po sila sa ngayon, medyo nagtitiis po at hindi nakakalabas,” Tejada told ABS-CBN News.

No reports yet to the Embassy of any Filipinos hurt because of the protests.
