29 police dogs sold in auction for old age

Kuwaiti police sold 29 dogs in an auction for around KD 6,000 ($20,000) although the animals had cost the police force nearly KD100,000 ($330,000).

Police said the dogs were auctioned to citizens at the police department in the capital Kuwait City and that they would be replaced with younger dogs.

The Arabic language daily Al Qabas quoted a police spokesman as saying the decision to sell the dogs was made after “they became relatively old and their performance started to weaken.”

“When the dog gets old, its sense of smell becomes weak… hence they are no longer as efficient as before in detecting drugs and other illegal stuff,” the report said.
