Number of kidnapped Pinoy seafarers in West Africa rises to 11

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has revealed that it has received a report about another piracy incident in West Africa.

The incident led to the kidnapping of two more Filipino seafarers in Togo, West Africa. The abduction was confirmed by the Philippine Embassy in Abuja.

“This brings to 11 the total number of kidnapped Filipino seafarers in West Africa, following the reported nine others who were captured in Benin last week,” the DFA said in a statement.

The DFA added that it is actively tracking the development of the case through its embassy and is now coordinating with authorities to ensure the safety of the two abducted Filipino seafarers.

“Moreover, the DFA maintains close contact with the seafarers’ manning agency and will provide updates, as necessary,” the statement added.

Last week, nine Filipino seafarers were kidnapped by suspected pirates as their boat was docked at the harbor of Cotonou in Benin.

“The Autonomous Port of Cotonou regrets to inform you that on Saturday morning, November 2, 2019, an act of piracy took place in the harbor area,” authorities said in a statement.

The ship, named Bonita, was attacked by suspected pirates and eight crew members including the captain were abducted.
