Large retail companies including convenience store 7-Eleven in Thailand will stop distributing single-use plastics in 2020.
Styrofoam food packages and other single-use plastic items, such as straws and cups will also be banned by 2022.
Thai Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa said this would make Thailand one of the major contributors in efforts to eradicate plastic garbage.
The environment chief also said that consumers should prepare their own bags to carry their own things.
“This type of campaign should have been done long ago. We have spent so much time trying to negotiate. At last, we made it,” the environment official added. (TN)
