Pinoy families fearful of common crimes despite low crime rate

The number of families who are victims of common crimes is lower in the third quarter of the year, according to the latest Social Weather Station survey.

The survey, done from September 27-to 30, found that found 5.6 percent or an estimated 1.4 million families reported that they were victims of common crimes.

The figure is 1.4 points lower than the 7 percent or estimated 1.7 million families in June 2019.

The September 2019 result is also the lowest since the 5.3 percent in June 2018.

However, the latest survey results also showed that there were more adults that are fearful of burglaries committed in their neighborhoods with 59 percent of Filipino adults fearful of burglary, up by 4 points from the 55 percent in June 2019.

There is also an increase of Filipinos fearful of walking the streets at night at 47 percent, up by 1 point from the 46 percent in June 2019.

Respondents also say that they notice that there are more drug addicts in their neighborhood at 38 percent, the figure is unchanged from June 2019.

The September 2019 Social Weather Survey was conducted using face-to-face interviews of 1,800 adults (18 years old and above) with 600 each in Balance Luzon and Mindanao, and 300 each in Metro Manila and the Visayas with sampling error margins of ±2.3 percent for national percentages, ±4 percent each for Balance Luzon and Mindanao, and ±6 percent each for Metro Manila and the Visayas.
