Phivolcs monitoring Mindanao fault line which could cause magnitude 7.2 quake

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) is closely monitoring Mindanao fault lines especially the movements along the Malungon Fault Line, which can produce a potential magnitude 7.2 earthquake.

The Phivolcs statement comes after today’s magnitude 6.5 quake that hit the town of Tulunan in Cotabato.

Phivolcs Earthquake Monitoring OIC Ismael Narag said they are looking at the possibility that the earthquakes last July and October were triggered by only one fault.

“Ibig sabihin lang nito, aside from being related, probably one fault may be triggering the other faults that essentially produce this major event,” Narag said in an interview on GMA News.

The agency said the series of the strong quakes are of same magnitude range from 5.5 to 6.5.

“When we analyzed yung earthquake records, they showed that the mechanism suggests, pahalang yung galaw noong gumagalaw na fault for this earthquake,” he said.

The Malungon Fault Line is considered to be the one which can produce the strongest earthquake among other active fault lines.

The Phivolcs team has visited Davao Del Sur and Cotabato to monitor the ground movement. (TN)
