DOH: Number of 11-year-olds with STDs on the rise — DOH

The Department of Health has raised the alarm on the increasing number of cases involving 11-year-old kids acquiring sexually transmitted diseases of (STD).

The DOH-Central Visayas was able to monitor children as young as 11 and 12 years old with STDs, according to reports.

“These children do not understand the risk of having multiple sexual partners. Most of them get paid for having sex,” SunStar Cebu quoted DOH-Central Visayas said in a statement.

Some children engaged in paid sex without knowing the risks that they are taking, officials said.

The HIV rate among 15-24 has been increasing too but those belonging to the age group of 25-34 remains to have the highest infection rate.

The 15-24 age group recorded 118 individuals tested positive for HIV. 200 individuals tested positive on the 25-34 age group.

“The increase in the number of cases is not always bad. The increase in the number of cases means that we are getting those infected to undergo treatment,” the DOH said in a statement.
