UAE to launch ‘robotaxis’

UAE is set to launch its first-ever self-driving taxis called, “robotaxi.”

The taxi without driver is a start-up in the UAE, which will partner with different businesses.

Hong Kong’s AutoX tapped some companies in the UAE to launch self-driving taxis, which will also serve as self-driving delivery services next year.

“The technology already exists. With the cooperation of government agencies, the UAE’s first commercial robotaxi will become a reality next year,” AutoX founder Jianxiong Xiao said.

Some of AutoX self-driving cars are operating in Europe, China and US.

“People will benefit from a world where they receive their delivered goods such as food, medicine, clothing, electronics, etc, via automated vehicles or robots, and get around town via a self-driving robotaxi,” he said.

AutoX said that robotaxi will be perfect for Dubai.

“We believe AutoX is an ideal partner for Dubai and the UAE. The country’s push to become a global technology hub and leader in artificial intelligence (AI) is impressive. We welcome discussions with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority, Abu Dhabi Department of Transport, and Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority to fast-track a robotaxi pilot based on our global learnings,” Xiao said.

The company is hopeful that it start operating in 2020.
