Study: Dads should stop drinking to avoid baby’s congenital heart problems

Soon-to-be dads should be wary about their alcohol consumption to avoid possible bad effects on the newborn’s health.

A new study has found a link between a baby’s congenital heart defect on their parents’ drinking habits before conception.

The new study shows that  fathers who drank during the three months before conception were 44% more likely to have babies born with congenital heart disease compared to non-drinkers.

The study also showed that soon-to-be dads who are binge drinkers will have a 52% chance of their child having congenital heart defects.

The European Journal of Preventive Cardiology published the study this week as they review the relation of drinking and birth defects.

“Binge drinking by would-be parents is a high risk and dangerous behavior that not only may increase the chance of their baby being born with a heart defect, but also greatly damages their own health,” the researchers said in a statement. (TT)
