The US Congress is starting a formal impeachment inquiry President Donald Trump, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced.
“The actions of the Trump presidency have revealed the dishonorable fact of the president’s betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of our national security and betrayal of the integrity of our elections,” Pelosi said in brief remarks. “Therefore, today, I am announcing the House of Representatives is moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry.”
Pelosi said US Congress will examine, among other issues, whether Trump sought the help of the government of Ukraine to conduct a smear campaign against former Vice President Joe Biden.
Biden is the front-runner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.
Meanwhile, Trump posted several tweets as Pelosi was making the announcement.
