Public servant jailed, to be deported for accepting bribe

Abu Dhabi’s court of cassation sentenced an expatriate public servant to one year in prison and ordered his deportation from the country after he was found guilty of accepting a bribe, newspapers said on Sunday.

The court of first instance had sentenced the unnamed employee at a government department to three years in prison, prompting him to appeal.

A court of appeals reduced the jail term to one year but kept the deportation order, pushing the defendant to appeal again with the court of cassation, which upheld that sentence and fined him Dh2,000.

Newspapers said the employee was found guilty of accepting a Dh2,000 bribe from another employee to alter a decision barring him from travelling.
