Department of Community Development grants license to 18 places of worship

The Department of Community Development (DCD) has finally announced the recognition of 18 places of worship in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain months after the agency first announced their efforts to give them official legal status.

DCD has given official legal status to 17 churches and one temple on the outskirts of the capital, as per a report from The National.

Among those included in the list us the emirate’s oldest church St. Joseph’s Cathedral, which dates back to 1965.

The move of DCD to legalize them is to ensure that religious leaders would have a clear channel of communication. From their end, they can use this to ask for support or obtain permission to host special events.

For Pastor Jeramie Rinne of the Evangelical Community Church, this would show how UAE “cares for religious minorities as part of their culture of tolerance”.

Many of the places of worship in the emirates were built on land gifted by its Rulers. These were operated with informal approval from local authorities.

If they had nowhere to go when they have questions before, Rinne said, now they can go to DCD to address their concerns and needs.

Sultan Al Daheri, executive director of DCD, said the licensing of these places of worship would now provide “an official unified channel within the government for religious bodies to go for special services and when they need advise or support and to assist their day-to-day running.”

Ahead of Sunday’s function. Several churches were lit up in green to mark the International Peace Day.
