Debt collector gets three years in jail for threatening borrower

A Dubai criminal court sentence a European man to three years in prison after he was found guilty of sending written threats to a woman.

The victim is his compatriot who also lives in the UAE.

The letter was sent by the man after the woman failed to pay her debt on time.

As he tried to get the borrowers to pay up, he stole her mobile phones by smashing the window of her car.

He was arrested after the woman reported to the police that he threatened to publish some intimate photos of her with her boyfriend online.

The court found him guilty of blackmailing, sending obscene words, stealing three mobile phones, and damaging her car.

In the UAE, the Penal Code and the Cybercrime Law penalizes threatening or blackmailing a person through social media or the Internet.

This crime can mean a jail time, a fine of up to Dh1 million, and deportation if the suspect is a foreigner and proven guilty.
