Severe penalties for filming women in weddings

People caught filming women in weddings in the UAE could be jailed for six months and fined Dh500,000, according to legal experts.

Such actions amount to violating privacy of others even though offenders may not know they are violating the law, Yousuf Al Sharif, an Abu Dhabi-based lawyer and legal adviser, told the official daily Emarat Al Youm.

The penalties apply to both men and women, who film weddings without prior permission and publish them online, he said.

“Filming women in weddings without permission from them for the sake of keeping or publishing them is a serious offence in the UAE… it could include imprisonment of up to six months and a fine of half a million dirhams,” he said.

Filming of people in other occasions or public places is also a privacy violation in the UAE and it involves imprisonment and heavy fines, he added.
