GrabCar driver mauled for upholding 4-passenger policy

A GrabCar driver was assaulted after he refused to carry five passengers in Quezon City.

Two of the four passengers who mauled 47-year-old Reynaldo Tugade have been arrested, a report by Manila Bulletin said.

Jan Mercado, 25, and Rhea Sangil, 23, are facing charges for physical injury and malicious mischief, police said.

According to the report, the suspects and three others, including a child, booked a GrabCar driven by Tugade at Apollo Street in Barangay Del Monte last Monday morning.

When Tugade saw the five passengers, he explained that he can only accommodate up to four passengers or he will be cited for overloading.

Police said the passengers told Tugade to just cancel the booking but he refused. It was at the time when one of the passengers slammed the vehicle’s door and started shouting expletives at him.

Tugade alighted from the car to explain but was punched in the face, police said.

The victim said at least four people mauled him before a concerned citizen pacified them.

Tugade was able to record the incident through his mobile phone. The video has gone viral online.

In a statement on Wednesday, the ride-sharing app clarified that their drivers are only allowed to carry four passengers.

Children, regardless of age, shall be counted as one passenger, it said.
