Sweden’s highest peak’s height reduced due to climate change, says scientist

A Stockholm University geography professor said Climate change has reduced the height of Sweden’s tallest mountain.

According to a report by CNN, Professor Gunhild Ninis Rosqvist confirmed that the glacier-covered southern peak of Kebnekaise mountain now stands at only 2,095.6 meters.

How is this even possible?

The professor said he has been measuring the peak each year with the use of GPS technology which only has a few centimeters’ margin of error.

Last September 3 during the end of melt season, their suspicions of the melting affecting the peak were confirmed.

Rosqvist added that what’s more alarming is in the past 10 years, the melt rate is now at one meter per year.

Over the past 50 years, the height has also decreased by an alarming 24 meters.

He expressed worries that what is happening to Kebnekaise’s southern peak may also be happening to all the glaciers in Scandinavia, adding that the melting is very rapid.
