Efforts to locate Filipinos in Abaco Islands and other neighboring islands in the Bahamas hit by Hurricane Dorian still continue

Twenty out of the 38 reported Filipinos in Abaco island were reportedly safe after a fellow Filipino got in touch with them.

Elmer Bornilla Bongon told The Filipino Times (TFT) that all means of communications there are still cut off and roads also are not yet passable.

“Abaco still underwater. 96% lost their homes. We are still trapped in one settlement with no power & water. Long recovery for us. Our places of work gone,” he said in a message sent thru Facebook Messenger.

Verlyn Gupit, whose mother is on the island, took to Facebook her concern about her mother’s safety.

“We are reaching out to our friends and other Filipino community in the Bahamas to check on their situation. Unfortunately, any means of communication are down,” she posted on her caption.

She also shared the photo of a conversation she had with a certain Ms. Genie on the update of her mother’s location.

She was told that her mother is at Coral Pointe-Great Cistern awaiting rescue from the US Coast Guard just like the others there.

Meanwhile, Labor Attache Angela Trinidad told TFT that they are now in contact with leaders and those in Freeport.

She said they will provide official updates as soon as they are available.

The Ministry of Health has announced earlier that at least 10 bodies have been identified floating on Grand Bahama located along a community near Over-The-Bridge.

“One victim died last evening. Another victim is a store owner in Downtown Freeport.”

Minister Duane Sands confirmed there were 20 victims of Hurricane Dorian.

Bahama Press, meanwhile, posted a short clip of the evacuation from Rand Memorial Hospital.

In the video, the patients, most of them were elderly, were sitting on wheelchairs in going out of the flooded health facility.
