4 passengers hurt as RORO with 10-wheeler truck full of cement tilts in Camotes port

CEBU CITY—A roll-on/roll-off (RORO) passenger vessel listed on its side while unloading rolling cargoes at Consuelo Port in Camotes Island at about 2:30pm last Saturday, injuring four passengers.

The MV Mika Mari 8 of Jomalia Shipping Corp. tilted as a 10-wheeler truck carrying 800 sacks of cement was about to disembark, said Lt. JG Michael John Encina, spokesperson of the Philippine Coast Guard Central Visayas.

Some passengers and crew members were thrown off the sea. The injured passengers were brought to the Ricardo L. Maningo Hospital in Camotes while the other passengers were safely rescued, Encina said.

The vessel had 149 passengers and 18 crew members. It also had 11 rolling cargoes.

Half of the vessel was submerged as a result. The Coast Guard sent its quick response and environmental protection teams to the area.

Coast Guard officials met on Sunday for the siphoning of 3,200 liters of diesel fuel onboard, as well as salvaging operations.

Booms have been installed around the vessel although there were no signs of oil spill, said Encina.
