270 dolphins, whales spotted in Sarangani Bay

Around 270 dolphins and whales have been spotted in parts of the Sarangani Bay by the marine experts in the past weeks.

The Philippine News Agency reported that marine biologists and divers from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 12 have also seen other species during its quarter monitoring last August 13 to 16.

The report said around 150 to 200 Fraser’s or Sarawak dolphins; 40 to 60 Spinner dolphins; six Risso’s dolphin; four pygmy killer whales; and two dwarf/pygmy sperm whales were in the seas of Glan and Malapatan towns Sarangani province.

As sea creatures were seen in the said bay, garbage such as plastics, cellophanes, plastic wrappers and other non-biodegradable materials were also seen floating in the area.

A number of fishing vessels conducting various activities in Sarangani Bay was also observed.

The said bay remains a key marine biodiversity and that what has been observed in the area “… may harm the cetaceans and other marine organisms (in the bay),” the report said.

The DENR reiterated that their office cannot protect it alone, as this needs a collaborative effort from various stakeholders to protect the marine biodiversity in Sarangani bay.
